Newmont suspends Brucejack operation after fatality

Newmont confirmed that a member of its workforce died at the Brucejack gold mine in British Columbia, Canada, on December 20.

The miner suspended operations, and senior leadership is on-site to support authorities with an investigation into the incident. Newmont said it will also complete an internal investigation.

"Our thoughts are with the person's family, friends and colleagues and we are offering our full support at this difficult time," Newmont said in a statement, giving no further details about the cause of the incident.

"The operation will remain closed to allow a full investigation to be completed and a comprehensive re-start plan developed to support safe operations going forward."

Brucejack is one of the highest-grade operating gold mines globally. Newmont acquired the mine in its recent takeover of Newcrest, which owned 100% of the site since 2021.

In October last year, Brucejack suspended operations for over three weeks following the death of a team member of mining and development contractor Procon.

Following that incident, Newcrest said it reviewed all activities at Brucejack to identify significant hazards and corresponding critical controls to prevent fatalities.
